CHAOYE PACKAGING KNOWLEDGE · EXPORT PACKAGING
A practical export packing checklist for reducing corrosion risk on metal parts during international shipping.
1. Why ocean freight creates challenges
Export cargo may encounter changing temperature and humidity during transit, storage, and port handling. Condensation can occur when conditions shift. The corrosion risk depends on the metal, surface condition, packaging, and exposure environment.
2. Prepare metal surfaces
Use an appropriate cleaning and drying procedure before packing. Residues from machining, handling, or washing can undermine corrosion-control measures. Avoid bare-hand contact with sensitive surfaces where required by the product specification.
3. Choose a compatible corrosion-control method
Options may include validated VCI packaging, approved protective coatings, moisture-barrier packaging, desiccants, or combinations of these. The choice should reflect metal compatibility, expected duration, packaging enclosure, and customer cleanliness requirements.
4. Design the physical package
Use cushioning and edge protection to prevent punctures and abrasion. Secure parts against movement, and ensure the outer carton or crate can withstand expected handling. A VCI bag with holes or an unsuitable closure may not perform as intended.
5. Validate before shipping
For valuable or corrosion-sensitive goods, define acceptance criteria and trial the packaging system. Record packaging date, materials, batch references, and handling instructions. Review damage and corrosion complaints to improve the process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a plastic bag alone prevent rust at sea?
Not reliably. Ordinary plastic does not provide a complete corrosion-control strategy.
Should I add desiccant inside a VCI bag?
Only when compatible with the VCI system and recommended by the packaging supplier; the methods should be evaluated together.
