How Much Stretch Film Do You Need Per Pallet?

CHAOYE PACKAGING KNOWLEDGE · STRETCH FILM

Estimate stretch film consumption per pallet and learn which wrapping variables most affect material use.

1. Why there is no universal number

Film consumption depends on pallet perimeter, load height, number of revolutions, overlap, film width, stretch ratio, reinforcement wraps, and the machine or operator technique. A single kilograms-per-pallet figure cannot describe every shipment.

2. Start with a simple measurement

Record the pallet dimensions and height, then document the wrapping pattern. For a rectangular load, an approximate perimeter is 2 × (length + width). Multiply perimeter by total wrap revolutions to estimate applied film length before accounting for changes in geometry and overlap.

3. Convert applied length to roll consumption

Where film is stretched during application, the length taken from the roll can be lower than the applied length. Use the actual achieved stretch ratio rather than a machine’s maximum advertised setting. Film mass also depends on width, thickness, and material density.

4. Worked example

For a 1.2 m × 1.0 m pallet, approximate perimeter is 4.4 m. If the wrapping program applies 18 revolutions, the nominal applied path is about 79.2 m. At an illustrative 100% stretch (twice the original length), the film drawn from the roll would be roughly 39.6 m, before allowances for tails, corners, and pattern differences. This is a calculation example, not a recommended wrapping specification.

5. Improve the estimate with a trial

Weigh a roll before and after wrapping several representative pallets. Divide the net film consumed by the number of pallets and record the wrapping settings. Repeat for different load types; this gives a more useful purchasing estimate than theoretical length alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I calculate film usage from roll weight?

Yes, by measuring net film weight consumed in a controlled trial. Exclude the paper core and other packaging.

Does higher stretch always reduce cost?

Not always. Excessive stretch can cause breaks or reduce effective load containment.

Buyer tip: Send suppliers your actual load dimensions, packaging equipment, expected order volume and shipping conditions. Confirm performance with representative samples before placing a production order.
