CHAOYE PACKAGING KNOWLEDGE · STRETCH FILM
Learn how to select stretch film gauge and thickness for pallet loads without assuming thicker film always performs better.
1. What does thickness mean?
Stretch film thickness is commonly expressed in microns (µm) or gauge. Thickness is one specification among several that affect a wrap system. Film formulation, stretch behavior, puncture resistance, and application method also matter.
2. Why load characteristics come first
A stable carton pallet and a pallet of sharp-edged metal components create different demands. Evaluate load weight, height, corners, protrusions, pallet condition, shipping vibration, and the degree of containment required.
3. Hand versus machine requirements
Hand application may need a film that dispenses and stretches predictably for the operator. Machine wrapping requires compatibility with the wrapper and its pre-stretch system. Do not transfer a successful hand-film specification to a machine without a trial.
4. How to evaluate candidates
Ask suppliers for consistent thickness tolerances, width, roll length, film weight, and relevant mechanical test data. Trial at least two suitable specifications on representative loads. Compare film usage, break frequency, load containment, and damage after handling.
5. Common purchasing mistakes
Avoid selecting by micron value alone, comparing rolls with different lengths or net weights, and overlooking packaging conditions such as cold storage or sharp edges. A lighter roll is not necessarily more economical if more wraps are needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is thicker stretch film always stronger?
Not necessarily. Formulation and stretch behavior can change performance at the same nominal thickness.
What thickness should I order?
Start from the load and wrapping method, then validate a candidate film in a controlled packing trial.
